I recently had my engine replaced due to what appears to be a piston ring issue (though they never stated that directly). My Kona is a 2020 SEL produced in 03/2020 included in the recall.

At ~27,000 miles, my check oil light went off during a cold start during the evening. The oil was dirtier than usual and slightly high, and the engine was making a very clear knocking sound. I didn't drive it that night and made an appointment for 0800 the next morning, but the engine died in the parking lot at 0745. Hyundai had it towed to the dealership and after hearing the engine knock they told me the engine would need to be replaced. Upon inspection, they found the engine had no oil pressure and metal was found in the oil pan. To the dealership's credit, they handled towing, the rental, and the repair quickly and covered everything while updating me along the way. I got lucky and they received a fully assembled engine within 2 weeks and I had my car back quickly (they said their wait times for these engines have been around 2-7 weeks).

For more context, I had all of my maintenance done at the dealership and had oil and oil filter changes at 7,020 mi, 14,383 mi, and 21,755 mi with no issues burning oil. They checked for engine knock at 21,755 mi and said it passed whatever test they performed. Most of my miles come from regular 200 mi highway trips at ~70 mph.

I believe my wife's 2020 Kona SEL 2.0L with 2900 miles has the piston oil ring problem, although my local dealer refuses to acknowledge it. I've posted a YouTube video of the noise it is making in hopes of helping me and others that may have this issue. Here's the link and description:

I would be interested to know if anyone else's Kona sounds like this.
Hello! I have a hyundai kona 2020- mine also sounds like this! I have an appointment coming up 5/9 to get the recall fixed

Has anyone had any luck getting Hyundai to cover a blown motor after 60k miles (second owner). It is a 2019 Kona 2.0 AWD.

I have 63k miles and threw a rod through the block last week. My VIN is part of the recall but the dealership is saying that was not the cause. Yet they can't tell me what caused the motor to blow. They said there was oil on the dipstick but have no idea what caused it to fail. When I asked he said you would of needed a camera rolling when it happened. They want $7000 to replace the motor and intake (metal shavings). I have contacted Hyundai customer care and created a case number with them. The dealership is no help and I am afraid corporate is going to leave me hanging since I am over 60k for warranty.

I have never had this happen to a car I own let alone something this new. I am absolutely screwed if I can't get this under warranty or recall. Any help or advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
Any update? Did you get this covered by Hyundai? I have a piston problem but they say my 2019 Kona isn't covered by the recall although it is the 2.0L engine.
