Undimmed running lights hack

1661 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  acsmith1972
The Kona EV LED running lights get dimmed when the headlights are on completely ruining the stance of the vehicle at night. Keep in mind that this is by design to comply with regulations in most countries and is true for most vehicles. However, in my opinion the brightness of the running lights does not project too bright nor does it create a hazard when driving. Combined with LED headlight bulbs (if not factory equipped) gives the Kona EV a commanding presence and a distinguish profile.

Just bridge port two and three in the connector as the pictures below and that's it. This amount of exposed copper cable will not bend the pins or shorten the connection. You don't need to cut wires and it's reversible at any time. Please keep in mind that each running light side is wired in the same way.

Usually, the running lights dim when the headlights are turned on. With this they stay bright.
Can you explain how you did that? Is it literally just stick a short piece of copper wire in there? Any particular gauge?
This would be a certain failure at our annual inspection.

Indeed, a savvy technician aware of this kind of hacks and inspecting indoors in a poorly lit shop will spot it for sure.

Any gauge equal or superior to the main cable and that it fits into the connector will do.

Sorry, I meant to reply sooner: Thanks! I was waiting for some work to be done on my car and as soon as I get a new set of LEDs I'll try your suggestion.

One other question now that I think about it: Can you test this without plugging a bulb in just having the engine on and turning on the headlights? My car isn't an EV, so the plug is probably slightly different.
