I'm sure this has been asked before but didn't see it in the forum. I bought a used 2019 Kona recently and am still getting used to it. My biggest confusion is about the estimate of remaining miles, which fluctuates a lot. It often will drop by 20 or 30 miles suddenly. Sometimes this is when it's been parked, but also when driving. Makes me nervous about how much reliance to put on it. Is this common and is there any way to deal with it? I'm tempted to just ignore that number but it's hard to do.

Edited: Sorry, thought the range question referred to the EV! The use of heat would not apply to the ICE Konas.
The range left estimate depends on many variables such as how you most recently drove the car, outside temp plus heat or AC needed (heat being much more), how fast you have been driving, elevation changes, etc. It just takes practice and experience to get to know how your mileage will vary. When you are planning a trip, you have to think about all these things. The biggest thing that you can do is slow down on the highway from 70 to 60 or 50. You can also shut off the heat if you really need to extend range in the cold!

I found the same thing on my 2019 Iron Man Edition. What I did was drive it until the gas light came on (about 20 miles to go) and got down to about 5 mile left. Then I filled it up to see how much was actually in the tank. It turns out on mine I still had about 1.3 gallons left so I know I can still get about another 20-30 miles before empty. As stated above, it all depends upon your driving conditions remembering that optimum gas mileage is about 50-55 mph so if you're speeding or going really slowly, your mileage will be lower. It also seems that if you were previously doing highway driving and filled up the miles to empty was higher than if you were doing local driving. I felt better knowing that I still had a little bit of a cushion in case I let it go down too low. Last thought: it's not really good to get too low on gas because of any sludge that can be sucked up at the bottom of the tank.
