From what Automotive News is saying, Hyundai is hoping the upcoming 4wd diesel variant will appeal to those in Alpine countries and help boost sales there. Mainly they're hoping to sell more Kona by offering 4wd with both gas and diesel engines. With how much emphasis some buyers in colder climates puts on AWD and 4WD, this plan could work out for them. Plus the car has a laundry list of standard features as well, some that other rivals may not have.

Hybrid should be an option that will build on its off-road capabilities from the way i see it. With the right hybrid tech and controls, it can outshine a lot of traditional setups.

Definitely! I've once wanted a Wrangler but the fuel economy on those things are so bad I just couldn't justify the purchase as fun as it may be. A more off-road ready Kona would definitely fill the void, especially a hybrid model.
