So I gave up on Hyundai OEM racks, Thule, and Amazon pinch ones. I found Rhino Rack on Etrailer.com Direct bolts to roof rail 10mm studs. Well made and sturdy. @ $330.00 Here are a few PICs View attachment 4944 View attachment 4945 View attachment 4946 View attachment 4947
Awesome!!! I wish I had found those. They look great and the best part is peace of mind. I haven't gone to a local dealer yet to see if there is anything they can do. Like I said in a previous post, it has been too long to send them back. Unless Hyundai makes good on them, I think I'm stuck with them and will only use them for light weight stuff. Thanks for the update. If I can get my money back somehow, I'll definitely get these. Otherwise, I don't think I want to invest another $300+ into this project. Thanks again.

if you still haven't found a solution you like, the aguri bars from mick's garage are solid and cheap, if not super refined. They do clamp under the edge/lip, so they're not coming off unless something breaks.

... tighten them to 53 ft-lbs as stated in the instructions...
The instructions I got said Inch pounds.
I made a mistake about the ft/lbs, sorry.

Glad that got cleared up. 53 ft-lbs sounded a bit excessive...

Ned - thanks for posting the pics. Not sure what Kona model you have but I have a Kona 2020.
I was about to order an OEM part but got confused with all the different part numbers.
I will order same identical racks and hopefully it will work for me as well. Primarily planning on hauling 2 bikes.

I have the Ironman Kona
It's been a long time since our last conversation but I finally got rid of my OEM racks (sold them online for a big loss) and just got the Rhino Racks. MUCH better!!!! Love them. Easy to install. Now I have to touch up the scratches that the OEM racks made. Ugh! Thanks again.

Hi, sorry to bug you. Of course I'm stuck on the very first step.
I was wondering if you remember when you mounted the base that will accept the feet to the side rails if you had to remove that little Black bolt underneath the cap. I got the cap removed just but instead of a hex nut as shown there is a little black molded nut. My mounting instructions say I should have to remove a hex nut for a Kona gen 1. No hexnet there but a molded black cap. Without removing that, when I use the flat washer and spring washer underneath the adapter that will accept the bolt for the mounting system there just doesn't seem to be enough thread. If I don't use the spring washer I'm fine! Just not sure if I'm supposed to remove that black molded factory nut somehow. If you have any memory of this I sure would appreciate it! TIA!

No problem. It is always nice to be able to ask for advice before doing a project (or during) so that you don't mess up. Yes, the directions were very poor. This is what I did (not sure if it is right but it worked perfectly). I popped out the caps (I wasn't sure how they came out and forced the first one a bit before realizing all you had to do was use a paper clip and they pop out). Then I removed the nut that was beneath it. You are calling it a black molded nut but I'm sure they are both the same, just use a deep socket (I think #10) and remove it. My kit came with a spring washer, small flat washer and big flat washer and also the "long" nut that the rail bolts screw into. I put the flat washer on first, then the "long" nut but didn't bolt it down all of the way because, as you said, the bolts don't reach it. I then put the spring washer onto the bolt, then the small washer, then put it through the mounting foot (3 pieces) and now it will reach the "long" nut. I then tightened the bolt to a snug fit.
At first, I, too, tightened the "long" nut but the bolts would not reach. Even though it was not down all of the way, as long as it grabbed a few threads, I'm assuming it turned even more once I was tightening it. After about a month of driving, I will test them again to be sure they are still tight but I don't think they are going anywhere.
Good luck!

Thank you so much for all the help! I have the Iron Man Kona as well and was really debating on getting a roof box for extra storage (and to add some more Iron Man details like the decal that was in the promo images to make the car look a little more aggressive). Reading this post really helped. My question how much more noise does the Rhino Rack add?

Any rack or roof box is going to add extra wind noise. I don't find the racks alone adding that much extra noise. Having the racks for carrying stuff (paddleboards, kayaks, skis, luggage) far outweighs the little bit of extra noise. They are also so easy to install that if you knew you weren't going to need them for a while and the noise really bothered you, you could remove them in under 15 minutes. The factory racks that I originally had on there not only were a pain to install (I had to worry about torqueing them down so they wouldn't fly off) but they also left marks that I had to touch up and still see slight scratches where they were installed.

New to the conversation here, but I can offer some advice. I have a 2022 Kona AWD Limited. I purchased the bolt-on Rhino Rack option. It uses a connector to secure to the factory-welded bolts. However, at 4NM, the cheap Hyundai bolt sheared off. I know! My heart left my chest. I’ve spoken to Hyundai and a body shop—no fix. So, if you go with the bolt-on option, be careful. I’m still not sleeping well after this screw up. 🤦‍♂️
