I wrecked my Veloster on the 15th of June.(single car incident) Suffered a fractured L1 vertebrae, but it seems to be healing without surgery, Anyway, Since the KONA won't be here for a few months. I can save up some money for a down payment. One thing that really smokes my herring is the claim that buyers can select from 20+ color and trim variations for their new KONA. What the dealer gets is what's available. There's no ordering a car. Am I right, or is there some trick to getting exactly what I want?

Real sorry to hear about your terrible mishap but welcome to the forums. I'm sure there has to be a way in order to custom order, if you'll willing to wait a little while more. I would consult with your local dealers first and don't just take one dealers word for it.
Thanks for the good thoughts but it could have been a lot worse! I'm trying to find a link that might help me with a special order car, but every dealer I've contacted says "we get what we get" and thats spreading out from Albnuquierque to AZ, CO, Nevada and TX and OK too.
So that essentially may be as good as you're gonna get than. I can imagine if you don't have a real good relationship with the dealer, it'll be hard to convince them to let you special order.

You might have better luck with a smaller volume dealer that needs you more than you need them. Higher volume dealers will rather do batch orders from what I noticed. But give it a shot and let us know, at the end of the day it comes down to approaching them.
I've notified three dealers of my interest in the Kona and at least two took me seriously enough to keep in touch at least weekly to let me know they haven't forgotten about me. When I worked at a KIA dealer, we had advance notice of deliveries, sometimes more than a week, and I hope the local dealers will give me a heads-up.
The more the merrier but thankfully they're good enough to keep you updated. A lot of dealers would just blow you off and not take you seriously.

Keep us updated as well though!

In your future visits to Hyundai dealers try asking the tech's about if they went for training or are schedule for it. Often that happens well in advance of a vehicles launch, even before the dealer gets their first demo.
Apparently the Kona is coming to the US in August so I can't see why they wouldn't have information right now. August is in a few days? At this point, they should be able to offer build sheets and what not as well opposed to just regular deposits.
For now we should keep an eye on the Hyundai USA website. Right now they don't even list the Kona as a future vehicle, as soon as it goes live on that part we should expect more information to release. Would be surprised if they go right to a normal listing.
I just put a deposit on the exact car I wanted which the dealer is getting from another out-of-state dealer. I have a few days to wait, certainly don't mind but they can find what you want elsewhere. Also I did look at all the inventory on dealers web sites in my state to what they had. I found out that way what is available. My dealer told me what you heard, it's a hot car, we take what they give us.

Good luck!
Got my 2018 KONA last week! It's a 1.6 Turbo limited. Has almost all the toys I like and practically none of the ones I don't. Unfortunately it's white with a black interior. My least favorite colors. But the interior is leather and white stays cleaner longer, or so I'm trying to convince myself.... But I LOVE the size and performance of the turbo. I just posted an issue with the HOMELINK system if any one can help. I'll get some pics up if I can.
