Annoying rattle in dash

362 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  IanC
My Kona has recently developed a very annoying rattling sound up front somewhere. It sounds like something hard (maybe a metal screw?) rattling up against the windshield. I've looked in the plastic housing for the lane-keep camera behind the rearview mirror and found nothing. Is it possible it's the camera itself? I have an appointment with the dealer soon but I'd rather not take it if I don't have to. I have a bad feeling they won't find anything.

Yup. It does it whether there's glasses in there or not, open or closed, and I've even held it while driving and the rattling persists.

Roll up a ball of paper towel and gently press it down between the windshield and the dash along the area where it seems to be. Sometimes a "tight squeak" can sound like a rattle and if located can be treated with a little silicone lube dabbed into the area with a Q-tip.

Another tip, put the front defroster on high while sitting still and listen for the rattle. Something may have fallen down in defroster duct.

The post above advising to check the sunglass compartment is a good first check. Catches me everytime when I store my sunglasses facing the wrong direction. :)

My big issue is that I can't seem to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. I'm bringing my mechanics stethoscope home with me today to try to pinpoint the noise location. I'm also going to trying some compressed air in the gap between the dash and the windshield and down into the defroster vent.
Maybe pull the cabin filter and check below?

I've had an annoying rattle in the same place . At least I'm convinced the noise is coming from my side of the car but my wife is equally convinced it comes from her side! Yesterday I finally (I hope) tracked it down to the camera power wire I'd run down the inside of the plastic trim that covers the A pillar. I routed the wire around the top of the pillar and ran it down behind the door rubber weather seal instead.

You wouldn't think an insulated, small gauge wire could make a noise!

These things have a habit of recurring tho!
