Embarrassing admission. When i wrote "Earth wire to the Number 7 wire (as in the diagram earlier post)" I didn't realise I had not pushed the plug back in securely.
Connecting to number 7 black wire does indeed work as earth and triggers the relay for high beam.

My thanks to AusKona for his comments re earthing. I have now earthed the relay to chassis and all works well.
