Navigation Initialization Unsuccessful after upate

I just got my wife a 2020 Kona Ultimate (used as a dealer loaner with 47 miles on it). Maps, etc. were still on the original version.
I followed the instructions at https://update.hyundai.com/US/EN/navigationUpdate to download the program then put the update on a USB drive. Everything seemed to go fine. These instructions use the USB port for updating, not the SD card.
I then put the USB drive in her Kona and went through the instructions to perform the system update. Again, everything seemed to work fine - no errors and it restarted a couple of times as I would expect.
Once everything was done I went to test it. Pressing the NAV button, I got the message "Navigation Initialization Unsuccessful. Please check the SD card and try again."
I checked the SD card (it was working before the update), removed it and reseated it. No change.
I also downloaded another copy of the update to a different USB drive and compared the two. They match perfectly.
Nothing in the instructions said anything about updating the SD card. Did I miss something? How can I fix it?
TIA.

You need to use the SD card in the back of the headunit, not a USB flash drive. Only the SD card has access to the programing on the headunit. So look on the back of the radio screen, there is a plastic cover where the screen meets the dash. Remove the cover, and there is an SD card there. Remove it, update the SD card with the new navigation info, and reinstall the SD card. Then it should work.

The instructions from Hyundai for this vehicle says to update through the USB port. And indeed when I look at it with MyHyundai it shows the software is updated. Hyundai customer service had no idea but gave me the number for the navigation software provider. He indicated that although the software was updated, the maps on the SD card were not. So I wrote a new SD card and inserted it. Everything works now.

If I understand correctly, then:
  • the Hyundai app lets you update using a USB
  • but only when the process is complete - and now you don't have navigation! - it gives you an error.
  • only by coming here do we find that one must do it again with an sd card anyway.

And for those of us without an ancient SD slot on our systems? I guess we don't get navigation until we go out and buy an SD adapter?

Is that how it works?

Negative. On the top back of the Entertainment/Navigation System screen bump is an SD slot just for the system. It is not for anything else like a SD full of music. Look at the back of the hump from the front of the car through the windshield You'll see the cover. It's labelled and you can pop it off with a fingernail. I just went through updating with the software on a USB Flash and got the 'No Nav, check the SD' error. Copying the files to the SD now. Hope it works. Found this info elswhere in the forums. So impressed by the Hyundai site instructions /S

has any of you found a way to disable the screen from turning to dark mode at night, when I first got this car, it's a 2020 Ultimate, bought new, the screen would stay in LIGHT mode even at night, I don't remember which software version turn the screen dark even in a shaded area and turns to light mode under sunlight, there's no option in the settings or am I not looking at the right place

Hello all, I see the SD card for the navigation update, and I do have an old laptop with a full SD slot. But I worry about updating this apparently special 32 GB old SD. Should I copy its files as a backup? Can I go and buy a high-quality mini SD that fits in those larger SD contraptions? I wonder what you found feasible.
